Dale was born in July 1932 in Worthington, Minnesota. He is the fifth child of William and Elsie Bartholomaus.
Dale served in the Army Security Agency, including a stint in Korea 1952-1955. After returning from Korea, he graduated college at Springfield College in Springfield Massachusetts. Later, he earned a Master's of Science from Indiana University.
Dale married Mary Lou Couch in 1955. Craig was born in 1958 and Derek was born in 1969. During these years, Dale taught Physical Education and coached basketball and other sports in Evansville Indiana, and then Evanston Illinois.
Dale and Mary separated and divorced in the early 1980s. Dale married Fran Righi in 1989. Together they have traveled to nearly 20 countries and made their home in Northbrook Illinois. Dale retired in 1991 and has not missed working a bit. When not traveling or sitting in the back yard, Dale spends as much time as he can with his first grandson, Sam.
